Indirect Impact

The shops and restaurants you purchase from during your stay in Xizhou affect the community in different ways. It is best to support local businesses, as Xizhou is on the path of becoming like every other tourist town in China, and that puts its culture and its community at great risk.

During your stay here you will notice a lot of jade and jewelry shops around town. These are sometimes opened by outsiders seeking for a great fortune in a developing village like Xizhou. The profit these shops usually earn bring little benefit to the community because of the fact that they are run by outsiders.

To support the community, try to always shop at local shops, eat at local restaurants, and try out the fresh produce sold at the Morning Market by the hardworking farmers.

In recent years, the living costs have risen abruptly because of the development of the village. A baba now costs 10 yuan instead of 5, and some residents of Xizhou are struggling to catch up with this quick development. This is why it is important to shop locally instead of purchasing from outsiders.

Show interest in learning about the culture, try to talk to the villagers about their lives in Xizhou and make smart decisions when you shop. You have indirect impacts on the community that most tourists who come by are not aware of.

Tip: Have conversations with the residents about the development in Xizhou during the recent years, you learn a lot and make connections at the same time!
