Etiquette

Xizhou is a very open-minded community, but there are few things to note when visiting Xizhou so that you can be a respectful and mindful guest.

Language

For example, when walking in the streets, always make sure to greet people, and try to engage in conversations with store and restaurant owners whenever you have the chance (unless you did not study your Chinese before your arrival). It is also important to note that in a village like this you will naturally stand out if you are of a different ethnicity, and even if you may not know a lot of Chinese does not mean that you may act differently and avoid basic things like asking for permission when taking photos of people. If you are unable to communicate in Chinese, gestures always work. Language level does not matter as much as the effort you put in to communicate with the residents here.

Clothing

Wear appropriate clothing (it should be casual, and absolutely refrain wear revealing clothing), and be extra considerate about your clothing choices when visiting temples and religious landmarks. Avoid extremely short shorts.

Traveling in Groups

When walking outside, travel in smaller groups, as large groups can disturb the daily flow of the village and other residents who are trying to get along with their days.

Bargaining

It may seem tempting to try to test out your bargaining skills in a village in China like Xizhou but in reality, you are having a direct impact on the lifestyles of the residents and the income they receive from their jobs. So, when you are out and about shopping for souvenirs or trying out some local produce, be respectful of the prices the vendors ask you to pay and be mindful of the rising living costs nowadays. Bargaining in Xizhou can be considered rude if you are asking for too much of one, and it will leave a bad impression for villagers in the future when they think about tourists.

Tip: When roaming out and about, minimize your group to 4 people max. If you can, try to travel alone! Or, you can bring a friend if you need some help with language or if you just want to experience everything with a buddy.
