28 DAYS

During the 28 days at Microcampus, students are actively stepping out of their comfort zones, whether it be by trying new food or approaching a stranger to gather information for inquiry projects. Students are also constantly learning about a culture different than theirs, and interacting with the residents to listen to their stories about their pasts and the childhood they lived of suffering the effects of historical events like the Great Leap Forward.

Students at Microcampus during these 28 days are not building character, but instead revealing character, learning about their working habits, their strengths, their weaknesses, and instilling good habits that they would otherwise not get to establish back in the bubble of Shanghai. Not only are the 28 days a fantastic learning experience, but also a self-journey students go through where they are mentally and physically challenged in different situations.

I had a great experience during these 28 days here at Microcampus. I was able to do all that I mentioned above and I was able to connect with my fellow group mates, the teachers, and the residents in Xizhou. I have learned about myself, the community, and a lot more about tourism.

Xizhou has become like a second home to me, a place that I really hope to return to later on in my life. The residents here are so open-minded and full of stories to share about the history and culture of Xizhou. I can see why the Lindens are so passionate about preserving and sharing Xizhou in the most beneficial and careful way. I see the beauty that they see; it cannot be found anywhere else, not in Shanghai, not in Lijiang, not in Dali Old Town, not anywhere in the world.

I am grateful for having an opportunity to participate in a program like Microcampus. I do not think there is anything like it in the world, the SAS students are extremely lucky to have visionary and hardworking teachers like Mr. T and Ms. Mai.
